Site Inductions: What to Include (UK Checklist)

Every person who sets foot on a construction site must be inducted before they start work — it is a CDM 2015 expectation, and on any managed site nobody gets past the gate without one. A good induction is short, site-specific and recorded. Here is what it should cover.

The core content

• Site layout — access and egress, pedestrian routes, exclusion zones, parking
• Emergency arrangements — alarms, muster points, first aiders, nearest A&E
• Site rules — PPE requirements, smoking, phones, housekeeping standards
• Key hazards — the risks specific to this site: live services, asbestos surveys, traffic, adjacent occupiers
• Permits — which tasks need one and who issues them
• Welfare — toilets, drying room, canteen, drinking water
• Reporting — how to report accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions
• Occupational health — dust, noise, vibration and manual handling controls

Make it site-specific

A generic corporate video is not an induction. The person delivering it should walk through this site's hazards and this site's rules. Keep it to 20–30 minutes, check understanding with a few questions, and translate or use a translator where English is not the operative's first language.

Record it properly

Keep a signed induction record for every operative — name, company, date, topics covered and signature — plus a live induction register so you can prove at any moment who on site has been inducted. These records are among the first documents requested after any incident.
