Toolbox Talks: How Often and What to Cover
Pro Site Docs · Guide
Toolbox talks are short, focused safety briefings — one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep a crew safe. Here is how to run them well.
How often?
There is no fixed legal frequency, but weekly is good practice on most sites, plus a talk whenever a new risk, task or piece of plant is introduced. Keep them short — 5 to 15 minutes.
What to cover
- Manual handling, working at height, HAVS and noise
- COSHH and dust/silica
- Underground services and excavation safety
- Lifting operations, plant and reversing vehicles
- Fire, first aid and emergency arrangements
- Mental health and wellbeing
Always record them
Record the topic, date and who attended — it is your evidence the briefing happened. Our Toolbox Talks Library gives you ready-written talks and attendance records. See free templates too.
