Do I Need a RAMS for Domestic Building Work?
Pro Site Docs · Guide
One of the most common questions we get from smaller contractors is whether a RAMS is needed on domestic jobs — extensions, loft conversions, driveways and the like. Here is the honest answer.
The short answer
There is no law that says "every domestic job must have a RAMS" — but CDM 2015 still applies to domestic projects, and you have a duty to plan, manage and carry out work safely. For anything beyond trivial risk, a written RAMS is the practical way to show you have done that.
When you really should have one
- Work at height (roofing, scaffolding, loft work)
- Excavation or groundworks
- Structural alterations, RSJs, demolition
- Electrical, gas or hot works
- Anywhere a main contractor or building control asks for it
Who the client is under CDM on domestic work
On domestic projects the client duties usually pass to the contractor (or principal contractor if more than one trade). That means more responsibility sits with you — another reason to have your documentation straight.
