How to Write a Method Statement (With Example)
Pro Site Docs · Guide
A good method statement is clear enough that someone could follow it on site and do the job safely. Here is how to write one.
Step 1: Describe the work and site
State the task, location, dates and the company/team carrying it out. Set the context.
Step 2: List hazards and controls
Reference your risk assessment — the key hazards and the controls that manage them, including PPE.
Step 3: Write the safe sequence
Number the steps in order, from setup to completion. Be specific: plant used, who does what, and the control at each stage. For example, for a small excavation: 1) Confirm permit-to-dig and services survey. 2) Set up exclusion zone and signage. 3) Break out and excavate by hand within 500mm of marked services. 4) Batter or support sides to design. 5) Inspect before entry.
Step 4: Emergency arrangements and sign-off
State first aid, emergency contacts and the rescue plan, then brief the team and record signatures.
